Nach drei Wochen Tibet folgten noch zwei Wochen durch West- und Nordchina: Durchquerung der Taklamakan, der größten Sandwüste Zentralasiens, und des Südausläufers der Gobi. Entlang der alten Seidenstraße lagen Oasenstädte wie Kashgar, Dunhuang und Turpan.
Die Wüstenlandschaften mit ihren riesigen Dünen, Salzseen und bizarren Felsformationen boten fotografisch völlig andere Motive als das tibetische Hochplateau. Endlose gerade Pisten, dann plötzlich uralt wirkende Bazäre und lebhafte Marktszenen.
Insgesamt wurden auf der gesamten fünfwöchigen Reise Tibet–Westchina rund 8.000 RAW-Aufnahmen gemacht, davon sind 332 dem Westchina-Abschnitt zuzuordnen.
After three weeks in Tibet came two more weeks through western and northern China: crossing the Taklamakan, central Asia's largest sand desert, and the southern fringes of the Gobi. Ancient Silk Road oasis towns – Kashgar, Dunhuang, Turpan – punctuated the route.
The desert landscapes, with their vast dunes, salt lakes and bizarre rock formations, offered completely different photographic subjects from the Tibetan plateau. Endless straight tracks suddenly giving way to ancient-feeling bazaars and lively market scenes.
Across the entire five-week Tibet–Western China journey roughly 8,000 RAW frames were taken; 332 belong to the Western China section.
