Vietnam stand schon lange auf meiner Liste für Endurotrips – die Kombination aus spektakulären Bergpässen, terrassierten Reisfeldern und lebendiger Kultur war zu verlockend. Im März 2025 war es endlich soweit: Ab Hanoi führte die Route in den wilden Norden, durch Provinzen, die noch kaum vom Massentourismus berührt sind.
Der Ha Giang Loop gilt als einer der schönsten Motorradwege Südostasiens. Steile Karstberge, endlose Kurven und winzige Bergdörfer der Hmong und anderer Minderheiten säumen die Strecke. Die Straße am Dong Van Karst-Plateau ist UNESCO-Welterbe und bietet atemberaubende Ausblicke ins Ma Pi Leng-Canyon.
Mu Cang Chai zur Erntezeit ist ein Fotomotiv, das seinesgleichen sucht: Goldgelbe Reisterrassen steigen in dramatischen Stufen die Berghänge hinauf. Die frühen Morgenstunden mit Nebelschwaden in den Tälern und erstem Sonnenlicht auf den Terrassen waren photographisch die intensivsten Momente der gesamten Reise.
Sapa und das Fansipan-Massiv im Nordwesten waren die nächste Station. Der höchste Berg Indochinas thront über einem Meer von Wolken, die Märkte der Bergvölker bieten farbenprächtige Trachten und lebhafte Handelsszenen. Die Gastfreundschaft der Bergbewohner ist überall herzlich und unaufdringlich.
Nach zwei Wochen auf den Pisten und Straßen Nordvietnams war die Rückkehr nach Hanoi ein Kulturschock der anderen Art – geschäftiges Stadtleben nach der Stille der Berge. Eine unvergessliche Reise durch ein Land im Aufbruch, das seine Traditionen mit erstaunlicher Würde bewahrt.
Vietnam had long been on my list for enduro trips – the combination of spectacular mountain passes, terraced rice fields and vibrant culture was too tempting to resist. In March 2025 the time had come: starting from Hanoi, the route headed into the wild north, through provinces barely touched by mass tourism.
The Ha Giang Loop is considered one of the most beautiful motorbike routes in Southeast Asia. Steep karst mountains, endless bends and tiny mountain villages of the Hmong and other minorities line the road. The Dong Van Karst Plateau road is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers breathtaking views into the Ma Pi Leng Canyon.
Mu Cang Chai at harvest time is a photographer's dream: golden yellow rice terraces rise in dramatic steps up the mountainsides. The early morning hours, with mist in the valleys and first light on the terraces, were the most intense photographic moments of the entire trip.
Sapa and the Fansipan massif in the northwest were the next stop. Indochina's highest peak towers above a sea of clouds; the markets of the mountain peoples offer colourful traditional costumes and lively trading scenes. The hospitality of the mountain dwellers is warm and unobtrusive everywhere.
After two weeks on the tracks and roads of northern Vietnam, the return to Hanoi was a culture shock in itself – busy city life after the silence of the mountains. An unforgettable journey through a country in transition, preserving its traditions with remarkable dignity.
