Zunächst New Delhi: ein Freund aus der gemeinsamen Islandreise feierte dort die Hochzeit seines Sohnes – indisch, groß, bunt und aufwendig inszeniert, mit mehreren Foto- und Filmteams. Anschließend Weiterflug nach Colombo, wo ein Auto und ein junger Guide warteten.
Die Route führte fast rund um die Insel: Negombo und Fischmarkt, die Tempelfelder von Anuradhapura, der Wilpattuwa-Nationalpark, Jaffna mit seinem Fort, Mannar Island, die Felsenfestung Sigiriya, Minneriya und Kaudulla (Elefantenversammlung), Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Dambulla, Nuwaraeliya – und schließlich eineinhalb Tage Yala-Nationalpark.
Am Ende der Reise ein medizinischer Notfall: eine spontane Netzhautablösung erforderte einen Sofortflug nach München und eine Notfalloperation in der Uni-Augenklinik. Die schnelle Behandlung rettete das Auge. Die Fotos sind dennoch vollständig – die schlimmsten Erlebnisse kann man fotografisch nicht festhalten.
First, New Delhi: a friend from a shared Iceland trip celebrated his son's wedding there – Indian-style, large, colourful and elaborately staged, with several photo and film crews. Then a connecting flight to Colombo, where a car and a cheerful young guide were waiting.
The route covered almost the entire island: Negombo and its fish market, the ruined temples of Anuradhapura, Wilpattuwa National Park, Jaffna with its fort, Mannar Island, the rock fortress of Sigiriya, Minneriya and Kaudulla (elephant gatherings), Polonnaruwa, Kandy, Dambulla, Nuwara Eliya – and finally one and a half days in Yala National Park.
Towards the end of the trip a medical emergency: a sudden retinal detachment required an emergency flight to Munich and an immediate operation at the university eye clinic. Swift treatment saved the eye. The photographs are nevertheless complete – some experiences simply cannot be captured on camera.
