Eine Woche Mitte Juni 2000: die KTM auf dem Anhänger bis ins Maira-Tal in Piemont, dann 1.800 km auf eigener Achse durch Piemont, Lombardei und die französischen Seealpen (Haute Provence). Die Pension im Maira-Tal war gut, preiswert und ließ den Hänger sicher im Garten stehen.
36 Pässe wurden überquert, 19 davon auf Schotter – alle klangreichen Endurostrecken der Region, nur nicht der Mt. Chaberton: der war noch tief verschneit und gesperrt. Größtes Hindernis war eine meterhohe Schlammlawine am Colle de Mulo nach zwei Tagen Dauerregen zu Beginn. Die Asietta-Kammstraße bot dafür herrlichstes Wetter und einen grandiosen Blick auf das Pelvoux-Massiv.
Reifen Michelin T63, grobprofiliert, bewährt auch auf Asphalt. Im Tankrucksack 2,6 kg Mamiya-Fotoausrüstung, in der Hecktasche das nötigste – keine Crossjacke, sondern Goretex. War richtig so. Technische Defekte: keine. Genaue Routeninformationen werden hier aus Schutz vor weiteren Streckensperrungen nicht veröffentlicht.
One week in mid-June 2000: the KTM on its trailer to the Maira Valley in Piedmont, then 1,800 km under its own power through Piedmont, Lombardy and the French Maritime Alps (Haute Provence). The guesthouse in the Maira Valley was good value, and kept the trailer safely in its garden.
36 passes crossed, 19 of them on gravel – every legendary enduro track in the region, except Mt Chaberton which was still deep in snow and closed. The biggest obstacle was a metre-high mud avalanche on the Colle de Mulo after two days of continuous rain at the start. The Assietta ridge road then rewarded with brilliant sunshine and a magnificent view of the Pelvoux massif.
Michelin T63 tyres, coarse-tread, performed well on tarmac too. 2.6 kg of Mamiya camera equipment in the tank bag, the bare minimum in the tail bag – no motocross jacket, but Gore-Tex. The right call. No mechanical failures. Precise route information is not published here so as not to encourage further track closures.
