Diese Zwei-Wochen Februar-Tour war eine Idee von Gobi und mir: Osteuropa im Winter auf dem Motorrad – weniger Touristen, mehr Atmosphäre, prächtige Winterstimmungen in den alten Städten. Die Kälte ist beherrschbar, die Erfahrungen einzigartig.
Krakau im Schnee ist eine der schönsten Städte Europas: der Marktplatz mit der Tuchhalle, das Wawel-Schloss auf dem Burgberg über der Weichsel, die jüdische Kazimierz-Vorstadt. Auschwitz-Birkenau in der Nähe ist ein Pflichtbesuch – ein Ort, der erschüttert und mahnt.
Prag kennt jeder – aber Prag im Februar ohne Touristenmassen ist eine andere Stadt. Die Karlsbrücke im Morgengrauen ohne einen einzigen anderen Menschen, die Prager Burg im Schnee, die Kaffeehäuser mit dampfenden Fenstern. Die goldene Stadt zeigt im Winter ihre intimste Seite.
Bratislava ist unterschätzt: Eine kompakte Altstadt, eine moderne Donauküste und eine Burg auf dem Hügel. Die Slowakei jenseits der Hauptstadt überrascht mit der wilden Tatra, engen Bergstraßen und einer Gastfreundschaft, die man in gut besuchten Touristenstädten nicht findet.
Budapest ist der krönende Abschluss: Buda und Pest zu beiden Seiten der Donau, das Parlamentsgebäude im Abendlicht, die Fischerbastei und die Thermalbäder im Dampf des Februarfrostes. Osteuropa im Winter ist eines der am meisten unterschätzten Reiseerlebnisse Europas.
This two-week February tour was an idea of Gobi's and mine: Eastern Europe in winter on a motorcycle – fewer tourists, more atmosphere, magnificent winter moods in the old cities. The cold is manageable; the experiences are unique.
Kraków in the snow is one of Europe's most beautiful cities: the market square with the Cloth Hall, Wawel Castle on its hill above the Vistula, the Jewish Kazimierz district. Auschwitz-Birkenau nearby is an essential visit – a place that shocks and admonishes.
Everyone knows Prague – but Prague in February without tourist crowds is a different city. Charles Bridge at dawn without a single other person, Prague Castle in the snow, coffee houses with steaming windows. The golden city shows its most intimate side in winter.
Bratislava is underrated: a compact old town, a modern Danube waterfront and a castle on the hill. Slovakia beyond the capital surprises with the wild Tatras, narrow mountain roads and a hospitality not found in well-visited tourist cities.
Budapest is the crowning finale: Buda and Pest on either side of the Danube, the Parliament building in evening light, the Fishermen's Bastion and the thermal baths steaming in February frost. Eastern Europe in winter is one of the most underrated travel experiences in Europe.
