Weihnachten 2012: allein nach Island, Mietwagen Suzuki Grand Vitara mit Spikes-Winterreifen, Differenzialsperre. Das Ziel: Island außerhalb der Touristensaison, in Schnee und Eis, und das Polarlicht fotografieren. Über 4.100 km, auch nachts, die Ringstraße mit Sãabstechern bis in die abgelegenen Westfjorde. Geschlafen im Zelt oder Auto – der einzige Weg, die Aurora in Ruhe zu beobachten, wenn sie erscheint.
Das Dämmerungslicht des isländischen Winters ist einzigartig: zarte Rosatöne und kühle Blautöne, oft im selben Bild. Die Gletscherbucht Jökulsárlón, Gullfoss, Skogafoss, der Mývatn-See – alles in Schnee, kaum Touristen. Die Aurora ist unberechenbar; eine Selbstbau-Stromversorgung und Intervallauslöser sorgten dafür, dass kein Aufleuchten verpasst wurde.
Februar 2016: Rückkehr mit Freunden aus Indien und Wolfgang auf drei Mietwagen. Neue Fotos mit der Sony α7R II und Zeiss Batis Objektiven – die Qualität ein deutlicher Sprung. Island im Winter, zum zweiten Mal: mindestens genauso beeindruckend wie beim ersten Mal.
Christmas 2012: solo to Iceland, rental Suzuki Grand Vitara with studded winter tyres and a locking differential. The goal: Iceland outside the tourist season, in snow and ice, and to photograph the northern lights. Over 4,100 km, often at night, around the ring road with detours into the remote Westfjords. Sleeping in a tent or the car – the only way to watch the aurora undisturbed whenever it appears.
The twilight light of the Icelandic winter is unique: delicate pink tones and cool blues, often in the same image. The glacial lagoon Jökulsárlón, Gullfoss, Skogafoss, Lake Mývatn – all in snow, barely a tourist in sight. The aurora is unpredictable; a custom-built power supply and interval release ensured no display went unrecorded.
February 2016: back with friends from India and Wolfgang in three rental cars. New photos with the Sony α7R II and Zeiss Batis lenses – a clear step forward in quality. Iceland in winter for the second time: at least as impressive as the first.
