Diesmal eine Tour mit meinem Freund Werner auf seiner Yamaha – Irland stand schon lange auf der gemeinsamen Wunschliste. Die Fähre nach Rosslare war der Startpunkt einer zweiwöchigen Umrundung der Insel im Uhrzeigersinn, entlang des Wild Atlantic Way an der Westküste.
Die Cliffs of Moher sind die bekanntesten Klippen Irlands – über 200 Meter senkrecht ins Meer fallende Sandsteinwände, an manchen Tagen im Atlantiknebel kaum sichtbar, an anderen in schroffer Schönheit herausragend. Die beste Perspektive bietet sich abseits der Touristenwege zu Fuß.
Connemara ist das wilde Irland schlechthin: moorbewachsene Hochflächen, einsame Seen, alte Steinmauern und weite Strände. Der Ring of Kerry und die Dingle-Halbinsel im Südwesten sind die klassischen Motorradrouten Irlands – kurvige Küstenstraßen mit Atlantikblick auf der einen und grünen Bergen auf der anderen Seite.
Irisches Wetter ist bekannt wechselhaft – in zwei Wochen erlebten wir Sonne, Regen, Wind und Nebel im steten Wechsel, manchmal alle vier an einem Tag. Diese Wetterdynamik erzeugt aber auch immer wieder dramatische Lichtstimmungen: Sonnenstrahlen durch Regenwolken über moosbedeckten Ruinen, Regenbogen über dem Atlantik.
Dublin zum Abschluss: Temple Bar, Trinity College mit dem Book of Kells, und natürlich das perfekte Guinness im richtigen Pub. Irland ist eines der gastfreundlichsten Reiseziele Europas – die Menschen machen das Land genauso liebenswert wie die Landschaft.
This time a tour with my friend Werner on his Yamaha – Ireland had long been on our shared wish list. The ferry to Rosslare was the starting point of a two-week clockwise circumnavigation of the island along the Wild Atlantic Way on the west coast.
The Cliffs of Moher are Ireland's most famous cliffs – sandstone walls dropping over 200 metres vertically into the sea, sometimes barely visible in Atlantic fog, on other days standing out in rugged beauty. The best perspective is found on foot away from the tourist paths.
Connemara is the wild Ireland par excellence: moorland plateaux, lonely lakes, old stone walls and wide beaches. The Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula in the south-west are Ireland's classic motorcycle routes – winding coastal roads with Atlantic views on one side and green mountains on the other.
Irish weather is famously changeable – in two weeks we experienced sun, rain, wind and fog in constant rotation, sometimes all four in a single day. But this weather dynamic also repeatedly produces dramatic lighting: sunbeams through rain clouds over moss-covered ruins, rainbows over the Atlantic.
Dublin for the finale: Temple Bar, Trinity College with the Book of Kells, and of course the perfect Guinness in the right pub. Ireland is one of Europe's most hospitable destinations – the people make the country as loveable as the landscape.
